My Work Experience

Arooj has just come to the end of a two-week work experience placement at Sheffield Futures and luckily for us she kept a diary …enjoy!

Arooj Shazad – Fir Vale School

Rang Mr Dave Holland to make an appointment.

“Hiya, can I speak to Mr David Hallan please?”

Got his name wrong :( – not the best start, but it wasn’t my fault, it was written wrong on the sheet. I was pretty nervous for my interview. Dad shouting “What time are you going to go?” I kept saying “NOW, NOW”. He dropped me off at Sheffield Futures and I finally met Mr David Holland. The interview went quite well…the days passed…and then, the time had arrived to go to work!

First Day

On the first day I came half an hour early, just in case I was late – well I’m sure everyone does that anyway. Lots of young people outside waiting for Star House to open. Eventually it got to 9am and the doors opened. I went in, got my badge thing (it let’s you get through the doors in the building!)

Went up to the 4th floor and sat at my own desk. I felt posh! :) Had a tour round the whole building, got told about health & safety and then it was time for LUNCH!

After lunch it was time to get down to some proper work – inputting data, counting some resource sheets – and before I knew it, it was home time.

Second Day

Was on the 2nd floor today working with Lisa on the NVQ team. Made some posters and was sorting some frequencies (basically did some statistics – which I am currently taking as a GCSE at school).

Made a new friend – Jackie Redfurn – she’s one amazing woman to have a laugh with! She’ll make you laugh until your belly hurts.

After lunch I made an actual CV of my very own. I didn’t think I’d get chance to do that until at least college or Uni. Kath Harrison was helping me out and she also brought in some biscuits. Thanks Kath!

Third Day

Interesting day….you know the Options books that you get at school. Well I was going through it saying what I thought was good, what was not so good and what could be improved to make them appeal more to young people.

Made some notes for Sarah Traynor (she writes the publications) and she told me that when they do next year’s publication there will be a note inside saying THANK YOU AROOJ SHAZAD. Whoop! :D

Fourth Day

Spent the day with the Library team on the Ground Floor – Lynne Halpin, Carol Cowen and Kath Roberts. They’re a great bunch. Did some photocopying, observing, folding and laminating and I was also answering questions from clients (and if I didn’t know the answer I would refer them to Lynne, Kath or Carol). We had great laughs about random stuff!

Fifth Day

Today one of our teachers, Miss Blake, came to see how I was doing. She came at 10am, we had a chat and then I introduced her to some of the people I’d been working with.

Hot chocolate break!!!!

Laminated some posters for Helen Bennett then went to see Ellen Chlebicka. She needed some URGENT help, so I was her help angel and sorted her filing cabinets. Only took me 10-15 mins too!

The next Monday

Spent the day helping Dave and Helen.

Tuesday (Day 7!)

Was with the library team (my favourite bunch!) sticking labels on stuff, helping people and all sorts. Then I did some work for Paul Friend, the editor of this website, giving him some feedback on what I thought.

The next few days…

The last few days I was helping out the Finance Team, then it was off to see Kath again and help clients with their English or Maths.

This placement was one well positive experience with some amazing people! :)
